The working poster from Ron Maxwell's official site
On this page, I will keep you up to date
on developments with this upcoming movie by Ron Maxwell. Ron Maxwell,
the director of such films as Gettysburg, Parent Trap II, and
The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, has recently prepared
a screenplay, to be made into a movie to compete with Luc Besson's The
Messenger: The story of Joan of Arc. For some reason, it seems the
production on this movie came to a stop, with rumors that the project
was stopped for good. All websites had stopped carrying updates for
this film. The official Ron Maxwell website has now updated their page,
with the following info. I will continue to update this page with movie
news, as it develops.
Studio:
Turner Pictures(?) Pictix?
Production Company:
Person-to-Person Films
Project Phase:
Pre-production
Who's in it: Mira
Sorvino (as Joan
of Arc), Albert Finney(Robert
de Beaudricourt?), Derek Jacobi(Bishop
Pierre Cauchon?), Carey Elwes(Jean
de Metz?), Kevin Conway(Jean
Dunois?), Steven Lang(William
Glasdale?) At this point, all actor/character associations except Joan
of Arc herself I do not know at all. I'm speculating based on what I've
seen of the actors and who I can imagine them as. Joan herself, however,
is confirmed as being played by Mira Sorvino.

Best information so far:
February 1: The Ron Maxwell website has updated their Virgin Warrior
page, and has put a few cast and crew names up, which means the project
isn't dead as earlier suspected. New cast members are Carey Elwes(Robin
Hood: Men in Tights), Kevin Conway ("Buster
Kilrain" from Gettysburg), Steven Lang
("George Pickett" from Gettysburg),
Derek Jacobi ("Senator Gracchus"
from Gladiator), and Albert Finney(Tom
Jones, Breakfast
of Champions). Seems like Mr Maxwell is sticking
with some of his Gettysburg cast. It wouldn't surprise me if I saw more.
February 11: Copies of the screenplay are available at the official
page for the movie, for a limited time.
February 24: No further developments as of yet, but remember that this
is a work in progress(actually, in pre-production),
so we won't be waiting forever for this movie. We should start receiving
better casting info and other developments once shooting is underway.
April 20: A "scooper" (and a Joan enthusiast like myself)
sent me this info regarding The Virgin Warrior:
"Just went to the website - looks like there is a website of the
company that will be producing the show - called pictix.... you can
go onto it through Ron Maxwell's site or through pictix.com - their
site is under construction right now, but it works like this: the public
puts in ideas on what kinds of movies they want to see and therefore
they have direct impact on what kinds of movies are made there. The
Joan of Arc movie is supposed to be made through their company. Also,
they are offering a deal where anyone can pay for tickets in advance
- and if a movie isn't made they would refund the money... I wonder
if this was made specifically with the Joan of Arc project in mind?
They will give anyone who pays a refund if needed. And they also
said that as they make a movie, they will have updates, costumes, cast,
etc... basically anything a director would see making a movie - which
means we basically would see it being made from the ground up... I think
this sounds pretty good..." Thanks heidi,
for the info! I know I'll be keeping track of that website myself. And
I'll also put the link to that new site on this page also. It's good
to know that we're finally hearing about details like production companies
now. Shouldn't be too long before we hear and see a few juicy details
about the production!
May 3, 2000: I checked out the Maxwell page and it looks like some of
the results of the pre-production stage are showing up there. You can
go there and see design sketches of city walls, and planned city skylines,
plus, there are photos of planned shooting locations, among them Reims
Cathedral, where the coronation scenes for "The Messenger"
were also shot. Lookin' awesome! I guess they will use CGI to
create different views of the city in the film. Also, the leading actress
has been officially confirmed by Maxwell's page: Mira Sorvino, of "At
First Sight" and "Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion"
fame, will be playing Joan.
If you have any information about this
movie that is not shown here, please
tell me! But I must be able to verify it before I will put it up
here.
