John Duncan was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1866 and was studying art by the age of eleven. He became a member of the Dundee Graphic Arts Association, and was closely associated with Patrick Geddes, who was a town planner and a "prophet" of the Celtic Revival. Geddes suggested this painting to Duncan. He soon began a study for Joan and finished this romantic and symbolist painting of her with the Scottish Guard (which she never in fact led) in 1896.

Incuded here is the study Duncan did in pencil.
